How it works

A plus at the centre of the cell and another on its corner, the same staggered arrangement as the dot field. Each is drawn as a single twelve-point outline rather than as two crossing rectangles, which matters the moment you switch to the outlined variant: two rectangles would show their shared edges straight through the middle of every cross.
