How it works

Pairs of two-by-one bricks, alternating between horizontal and vertical across a cell four units square. Four units is the smallest cell that closes: a two-unit cell has exactly the right area for two bricks but no way to place them without an overlap, which is why the obvious version of this pattern tiles with a fault line running through it. Opening the gap turns a solid weave into a lattice.
