How it works

A cell one brick wide and two courses tall, which is the smallest unit that contains the offset. One course would repeat straight and give a stack bond, where the vertical joints line up all the way down the wall — structurally useless and visually flat. Offsetting the head joint by half a brick between courses is what makes it a bond at all.
