How it works

The two diagonals of the cell, corner to corner, giving a lattice turned through forty-five degrees. Every line ends exactly on a corner, which is the one place a stroke has half its width outside the cell, so the motif is repeated into the neighbours and the tile keeps only what belongs to it. Without that, every junction in the field would show a chipped join.
