Start buildingHow it works
Scatter some sites, then give every point on the sheet to the one closest to it. The boundaries that fall out are the perpendicular bisectors between neighbouring sites, which is why the cells meet at flat walls and three-way junctions rather than anything softer. Relaxation moves each site to the centre of its own cell and starts again; a few passes is the difference between a field that looks like noise and one that looks like it grew. It is the same partition that describes a giraffe’s markings, a dried lake bed and the catchment of a set of shops.
