Each dot is placed one fixed angle further round than the last, at a radius growing as the square root of its index — the square root is what keeps the density even instead of crowding the rim. At 137.507°, the golden angle, no two dots ever fall on the same ray and the packing is as tight as it can be; the arcs your eye picks out are Fibonacci numbers of dots, which is why sunflowers and pinecones count the way they do. The interesting part is the neighbourhood: a hundredth of a degree either side and the spiral arms unwind into coarse spokes.
