A fractal noise field is sampled on a lattice, and for each of a series of threshold values the boundary between above and below is traced by marching squares: every cell compares its four corners, looks up which edges the contour crosses, and interpolates the crossing point along each. The result is a topographic map of a landscape that does not exist. Raising the level count is exactly like tightening a map’s contour interval — the lines crowd where the field is steep, which is what makes the slopes legible.
