Colour

Leaves the backdrop unpainted so the pattern drops onto any surface. Ridgeline and Iso Cube Grid still paint the colour above, because it is what hides the shapes behind them.

How it works

A stack of horizontal profiles, each lifted by a band of fractal noise and windowed by a bell so the disturbance dies away at both ends and the margins stay flat. What makes it read as terrain rather than as a stack of wiggly lines is occlusion: each profile is filled with the background colour before it is stroked, and they are painted back to front, so a tall ridge genuinely hides the one behind it. Drop the amplitude to nothing and it collapses to ruled lines — the depth was never in the drawing, only in the painting order.
