Claude is Anthropic’s chatbot, and its reputation rests less on flashy features than on how it handles long, detailed work: reading a full contract, holding context across a sprawling codebase, or following a multi-step instruction without drifting off course. That makes it a common pick for people doing analysis-heavy writing or software development rather than quick one-off questions.

Claude Code, its terminal-based coding agent, is the standout for developers — it can read a repository, plan a change across multiple files, and execute it with the developer approving steps along the way, which is a meaningfully different workflow from pasting snippets into a chat window. Artifacts, the live-updating side pane for generated code and documents, serves a similar purpose for non-coding work: it separates the output you’re iterating on from the back-and-forth conversation producing it.

It’s not the tool to reach for if you want image generation baked in — Claude has none — and the free tier’s message caps are noticeably tighter than some competitors, which shows up fast for anyone using it daily. Heavy Claude Code users often find themselves outgrowing the Pro plan and facing a real jump in price to Max.

As a general chatbot it’s a strong, careful generalist rather than the most permissive one — it tends to hedge or decline more readily on ambiguous requests than some competitors, which some users read as trustworthy caution and others find overly conservative.

Features

Long context windows

Handles large documents, codebases or transcripts in a single conversation without losing earlier context.

Artifacts

Generated code, documents or diagrams open in a separate pane that updates live as you iterate, instead of scrolling through chat.

Claude Code

A terminal-based agentic coding tool that can read a codebase, make multi-file edits and run commands on request.

Projects

Group related chats with shared documents and instructions so context carries across a whole piece of work.

Extended thinking

A visible reasoning budget for problems where a first answer is usually the wrong one, traded against latency on the ones where it is not.

Connectors and tools

Attaches to external systems through the Model Context Protocol, so the assistant reads live data rather than a paste of it.

Use cases

  • Reviewing and editing long documents or contracts
  • Agentic coding and multi-file refactors
  • Summarizing and reasoning over large codebases or datasets
  • Drafting analysis-heavy or technical writing
  • Connecting the assistant to internal tools and data through MCP
  • Working through a long research paper or spec without splitting it into chunks
